Art and Crystallography

DGK-News Date: 25. März 2008

Dear Colleagues,

The International Union of Crystallography is doing several efforts to strengthen the understanding and the development of the relations between crystallography and many different branches of art. A new commission on Crystallography, Art and Cultural Heritage (tentative title) is now being considered and will most likely be officially proposed during the forthcoming General Assembly in Osaka, Japan, next August. In the last IUCr congress (Florence, Italy, August 2005), a special session on Art and Crystallography was held with much success. As a continuation of it, a special session on the same topic will be held also during the XXI IUCr Congress in Osaka. This will be held as an evening session on Tuesday, August 26, 2008, from 19:00 to 21:35. We have two invited lecturers (Emil Makovicky from Copenhagen and Yoshihiro Kusano from Kurashiki), who will present several examples of crystallographic patterns and their symmetry in the Japanese and foreign art. We would to invite you consider submitting an abstract for this evening session. You can find the registration form and abstract submission form at the congress website, www.iucr2008.jp Our session is marked as „ES“ or No. 99. For this special session the restriction of one abstract per presenting author does not apply.

We hope to see you soon in Osaka!
